Social Media Internship at DW - Miika's Insider Story
*Employment status alert* Miika decided to approach new exciting opportunities and left Daniel Wellington in August 2024. He gave thumbs up to leave the post
Social Media is at the inner core of DW. Our first picture on Instagram was posted back in July 2012 and a lot has happened since. Miika joined as an intern in 2023 and shared in this post how to land an internship and what you can expect from being an intern and working at Daniel Wellington. First, an intro!
- Works as a Social Media Coordinator (part-time while studying)
- Born in Finland → Moved to Sweden 2022
- Enjoys all things arts, culture, fashion, and food. Vintage thrift shopping into a wine bar=the dream
- Joined DW 2023 as an Intern
How come you joined DW?
I was looking for experience in Social Media (SoMe). I’m much into fashion and accessories also. When I saw the ad for DW, a Swedish brand known for its presence on social media and its reputation, it felt like a great learning opportunity.
What was the experience like, being an intern at DW?
First off, I’ve been a part of an amazing team. You are encouraged to try new things. You can test and see how it works. Failure is ok which has been amazing for learning. You are also given a lot of space to work.
I was actually quite surprised that my ideas were also welcome at the beginning - I thought interns were supposed to just sit and listen and observe. But my input was turned into action.
What did you do in the role as Intern?
It was a wide spectrum of SoMe marketing tasks. We started with in-house content - creating content for Instagram and TikTok. Over time we got more responsibilities like finding creators and doing UGC collaborations - planning, negotiating executing, and posting the content. By the end of the internship, I took over more TikTok management - scheduling, community management, participating in brainstorming for product launches, and more.
How did the role change when you converted to an employee?
It's very similar but the responsibilities keep adding. And when they don't, when I want a challenge, I can ask and get something new which gives me new learnings.
What are the greatest challenges working/internshiping here?
There are a lot of challenges in the nature of the work. SoMe is changing all the time. I have really learned that in marketing and SoMe you need to be able to handle failure to move on to the next thing.
What's your favourite moment working here?
There’s a lot to choose from but the one thing that comes to mind is related to my love for Taylor Swift. We convinced Lianne (manager) to do a Taylor Swift Social media giveaway. It was a fun period where we posted content around her album drop and had a giveaway with 1989 TV charms.
If someone wants to become a SoMe Intern here, what would you recommend to them?
I think that having made content, for my own use for fun, paid off since it was a part of the application process to add some SoMe work. It was clear that you are not supposed to know everything as an intern, and that it was more about attitude, but my own TikTok sure helped out. And when you start working here, have an open mind. Be brave speak up, and give opinions. In the beginning, I was nervous about giving input. Dare to share your ideas.
